Knoll Packaging shortlisted for 2 Pentawards for Packaging Innovations

Knoll was nominated its achievements with Molded Pulp and Complex Rigid Packaging

August 5, 2024

Knoll Printing & Packaging, a leader in the deluxe packaging industry for 40 years, is shortlisted for the 2024 Pentawards: The MAC Frosted Frenzy Advent Calendar is shortlisted for Limited Edition in the Body, Health & Beauty Category, and the Knoll Ecoform Molded Pulp Ornament is shortlisted for Sustainable Design in the Professional Concepts category. Both projects showcase Knoll’s technical expertise and creative engineering.

The MAC Frosted Frenzy Advent Calendar is shortlisted for Limited Edition in the Body, Health & Beauty Category. The exterior of the Advent calendar is classically shaped and uses a silkscreen UV frosted snowflake pattern on sustainable plastic-free metalized paper to create the effect. When you open the Advent calendar, a multi-dimensional pop-up appears that was perfectly created with laser cutting, and is stamped silver on one side. It is an engineering marvel for the giant pop-up to function each time the consumer opens and closes the Advent. The pop-up was also meticulously assembled by hand for this ultimate ‘wow’ effect. Surrounding the 3D pop-up are 24 individual folding doors and rigid dividers that create a maze to hold each product. This year’s Advent calendar is truly a frosted frenzy that incorporates a variety of highly technical processes to achieve the finished product, while maintaining the highest level of sustainability.

The Knoll Ecoform Molded Pulp Ornament is shortlisted for Sustainable Design in the Professional Concepts category. Molded Pulp was chosen for its sustainability benefits (certified recyclable and biodegradable), and can be shaped to any size, allowing for endless creative possibilities, including a holiday ornament. The ornament is perfectly executed to hang and features a unique tab closure to allow it to remain securely closed. The exterior has a smooth surface to create the shape, and multiple layers of pulp were used to create the interior cavity to hold any product or treat. The decoration was achieved with pad printing, which is a technical challenge on rounded surfaces, and brings even more holiday cheer to the sustainable concept.

Benjamin Cohen, Chief Marketing Officer, commented, “We are thrilled to be shortlisted for the Pentawards this year, which celebrates the best of packaging design. Each project highlights our unique expertise at KNOLL and celebrates how sustainability and engineering can unite for extraordinary packaging executions. The MAC Advent Calendar is an engineering marvel, constructed entirely of FSC Paper & Board. I’ve personally seen the excitement when the advent is opened to reveal an enormous pop-up that functions perfectly each time. Additionally, the Knoll Ecoform Molded Pulp Ornament is a personal achievement for our team as it was developed entirely in-house by our global innovation team. Our mission is to consistently push the boundaries of Molded Pulp and look for new ways to implement the material. The Knoll Ecoform Molded Pulp Ornament is a culmination of this work as we continue to set the standard for sustainable packaging.”

Over 2,000 entries from 62 countries across the globe were submitted to the Pentawards. They will be announced in October at the Pentawards Gala in London.
